More than 15,000 Contra Costa residents will experience homelessness during the year. A homeless count in 2011 found 4,272 homeless men, women and children in Contra Costa, not including the hidden homeless (those living with friends, family or in cars). There are 1,625 homeless school-age children in the county. The number of homeless parents and children jumped dramatically from 414 in 2009 to 1,307 in 2011.
As an innovative leader, SHELTER, Inc. helps over 6,000 men, women and children in Contra Costa each year; almost half are children.
